Speaker for the Evening

Camp member Hubert Haas, our speaker for the evening, had the 1st of a 2-part talk on the Battle of Cold Harbor.

The Battle of Cold Harbor, the final battle of Union Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant's 1864 Overland Campaign during the American Civil War, is remembered as one of American history's bloodiest, most lopsided battles. Thousands of Union soldiers were slaughtered in a hopeless frontal assault against the fortified troops of Confederate General Robert E. Lee. Grant said of the battle in his memoirs "I have always regretted that the last assault at Cold Harbor was ever made. At Cold Harbor no advantage whatever was gained to compensate for the heavy loss we sustained."

 Honoring Robert E. Lee

1807 - 1870

By

Heyward Hutson

This year marked the 200th anniversary of the birth of the most revered son of the South, Robert E. Lee. The non-profit Lee Commission is focused on recognizing, honoring, and celebrating Robert E. Lee’s place in history, particularly in South Carolina. The commission, which is made up of 11 citizens, includes Camp member Heyward Hutson and noted local Lee historian and publisher, Doug Bostick. The commission hosted one event April 27th and will host a second event in November.

In the spring of 1870 Lee took, at the recommendation of his doctor and family, a “health trip”. Near the end of his 2-month trip, he spent 4 days in Charleston and stayed with Washington Jefferson Bennett. From Bennett’s home on April 27th 1870, Lee addressed the citizens of Charleston. To commemorate the event the Lee Commission hosted a black tie event and included a keynote address by Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial writer Paul Greenberg.

The second event is scheduled for the weekend of November 10th to mark Lee’s arrival in Charleston in 1861. The commission will host a Saturday symposium focused on the career of Robert E. Lee. The commission will publish the proceedings of the sessions to be made available to the public.
