August 2006

HL Hunley Camp The meeting was called to order and Commander Wright recognized our guest and we felt privileged to have the 6th Brigade Cmdr David Rentz attending.

Monty Jones gave our invocation for dinner. Michael Blackwelder prepared our fine meal.

After dinner we had the pledge, salutes, and Walker read the charges given to us by Lt. General Stephen Dill Lee in 1906.

Our guest speaker was Adam Byerly and he talked about the Citadels involvement in the Civil War and the Star of the West Camp #1258.

The Cemetery Committee is going to have Boone Hill Cemetery as a heritage project for 2006 and 2007. There are thirteen soldiers and about seven to nine unmarked graves in the cemetery.

We are going to need camp members to help with cleaning headstones, doing some ground work, and placing southern crosses on graves. Also, camp members can help by donating southern crosses for $35.00 each. If we don't get enough donations, the camp will have to buy the crosses.

If anyone is interested in helping at the cemetery or donating a cross, please see Woody

Brown, Bobby Miller, Joe Willis, David Mitchell, or Larry Jameson.

A word from our Commander

Compatriots,
These past several weeks have seen some difficult and sad times for our camp members and their families. Our Compatriot James Doyle Gilliam passed away very unexpectedly .Our camp made a donation to the Shriners Hospital in Doyles honor. Dale Presley, Chuck Botts, and Charles Leggett served as Honor Guards at his funeral. It was evident that his family appreciated their effort because I saw several of them make a special point to thank them. Doyle will be greatly missed.

Several of our compatriots have been "under the weather" recently. 1st Lt. Commander Joe Willis had surgery the middle of last month, our 3rd Lt. Commander Dale Presley broke his wrist, Adjutant Rick Andrews has been ill, even returning to the hospital since having knee surgery, and our Surgeon Larry Jameson has been in physical therapy with his hand, and had to return to the hospital recently for additional surgery. I do have to mention that each of these men attended our July meeting. This surely shows the dedication they have for us in the Hunley Camp.

1st Lt. Commander Joe Willis and I will give a report on the S.C.V. National Convention at the August meeting.

Please keep Doyle's family and our other Compatriots in your thoughts
and prayers.

Deo Vindice!

E. Walker Wright
