DUES ARE PAST DUE

If you have not paid your dues by now they are seriously past due and on November 1st they will be considered delinquent.  Compatriots that are delinquent will have to pay an additional $10.00, $5.00 each for Division and National, to bring their membership status back up to a member in good standing.  If you have extenuating circumstances, please call Rick Andrews so he can help resolve the problem.

What you may not know is that payment of dues on time, retention of existing members and recruitment of new members plays a big part in the selection process used by Division and National for the Camp of the Year Awards.  Winning the Division Camp of the Year Award and placing 3rd in the National Camp of the Year Award was a truly outstanding accomplishment for the Hunley Camp and its compatriots.  Congratulations to all and let’s keep up the good work by getting those dues in right away.  Thanks, Rick Andrews

ELECTIONS COMING UP SOON

Please be aware that this is an election year for Camp officers and it is coming up real soon.  Commander, 1st Lt. Commander, Adjutant, Treasurer, and Color Sergeant are all elected positions and we will be taking nominations at our November meeting.

Each nominee will be given a few minutes to speak at the November meeting and the voting will take place at our December meeting (Annual Meeting).   Newly elected officers will take command after the swearing in ceremony at the Lee Jackson banquet in January.

All Hunley Camp compatriots are urged to become an active participant in our Camp and what better way than by serving as one of our officers.  If you are not inclined to run for one of the elected positions but would be willing to serve as one of our many appointed officers then by all means please make this known to either Commander Walker Wright or Adjutant Rick Andrews so that your name can be placed in nomination at our November meeting or placed on a list for consideration by whomever is elected as our new Commander.  This is your chance to make changes and help our Camp grow.

Meritorious Service Metal

Cmdr. Walker also presented Adjutant Rick Andrews with the Meritorious Service Metal award given to him by the Sons of Confederate Veterans.

Lee/Jackson Banquet

The time is drawing near for our Lee/Jackson Banquet. It will be on Friday, January 19, 2006 and will be held at The Bethany United Methodist Church in Summerville.  Stan Clardy will be guest speaker and will also perform his Confederate play.
Our social hour is from 6:00pm to 7:00pm. At this time, all can socialize and look at all the items on the silent auction. If you plan to contribute items for the silent auction, please, get them to Rick Andrews. The sooner he receives these items the better it will be for him to set it up. More info will come in the future

Statement of SCV Leader on Franklin Flag Ban

Christopher M. Sullivan, Commander-in-Chief of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, responded today to Franklin, Tennessee Mayor Tom Miller’s attempt to forbid the presence of a Confederate flag from upcoming ceremonies commemorating the Battle of Franklin.

Commander-in-Chief Sullivan:

Mayor Tom Miller’s desire to sanitize the Battle of Franklin commemoration by banning Confederate flags is truly regrettable. Moreover, his statement that the Confederate flag is “anathema” is offensive to all of us who love and respect our Southern heritage.

First of all, Mr. Miller demonstrates an appalling ignorance of American history and the meaning of Southern symbols. The Confederate flag is an important reminder to Southerners who only want to honor their ancestors. We find Mr. Miller’s lack of understanding and willful disregard of the opinions of others insulting.

If Mr. Miller wants to ban the Confederate flag at this event, presumably he also objects to the participation of all of  those in Tennessee, and throughout the South, who support the Confederate flag as well.

Furthermore, while Mr. Miller is to be commended for leading the City of Franklin in preserving more of the original battlefield area, it is mystifying to those of us in the historic preservation community that he would then deliberately antagonize the very people who generously support such efforts.

Finally, Mr. Miller fails to understand that his arrogant attempt to enforce his own personal political agenda is simply a violation of long-standing legal principles. As a state actor exercising governmental authority, neither Mr. Miller nor any other governmental official may use the power of his political position to alienate American citizens from their fundamental right of free speech simply because he disagrees with them.

Although the city seems to be trying to modify their position, regrettably the Mayor has refused to speak with me or any other SCV officials about this matter.

The Sons of Confederate Veterans have a serious commitment to historic preservation. In 2005 the national Sons of Confederate Veterans contributed $21,000 to the Tennessee State Museum to fund the restoration of Confederate flags in the collection. Also, the SCV’s Tennessee Division has committed several thousands of dollars over an extended period to this same cause, making their first donation of $2,500 this year.  Headquartered in Columbia, Tennessee, the Sons of Confederate Veterans is a national historical society with more than 32,000 members in all 50 states. Founded 110 years ago, in 1896, the SCV is composed of men whose ancestors honorably served in the Confederate armed forces.
