The Hunley Memorial was held at Breach Inlet where the H. L. Hunley traveled into the night on February 17, 1864 and made history as the first submarine to sink an enemy ship in wartime. The ceremony inside Sunrise Presbyterian Church was a remembrance to the memory of those brave soldiers that gave their lives to the Cause. Sen. Glen McConnell gave a very moving tribute to the Hunley Crew, noting their bravery and determination in completing their mission. The re-enactment widows all were given a rose in which they laid in the water to honor each soldier who lost their life that fateful night. The congregation left the church, went to the inlet and the memorial ended by placing a wreath in the surf to honor the Hunley Crew. Re-enactors gave a three round volley. There were three cannons which also gave three volleys. Likewise, the widow re-enactors of the USS Housatonic laid a wreath in the surf as well. Representing the HL Hunley Camp 143 was Joe Willis, Woody Brown, Larry Jameson and his father Mr. Jameson . |
